Bromelia balansae, also known as the Heart of Flame Bromeliad, is a spectacular architectural terrestrial bromeliad with long, heavily spined green leaves forming a dramatic rosette. Its bold structure makes it a striking feature plant for collectors, rock gardens, feature beds, and large containers.

This large bromeliad is especially impressive when flowering. The centre flushes brilliant scarlet red and produces an upright flower spike carrying unusual purple or magenta and creamy-white flowers. With time, mature plants can form substantial clumps through offsets.
